If you are a parent, you know the importance of setting a good example. Your children watch and mimic everything you do. So, when it comes to their dental health, it’s no surprise that children are vulnerable to their parents’ perception of the dentist.
A new study published by Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid suggests that dentist fear is passed on to children by their parents. However, the study went further to examine the role that the mother vs. the father plays in their children’s attitudes toward the dentist.
The study included 183 children between the ages of 7 and 12 and their parents. The findings suggested that it is the father’s attitude toward the dentist that children are more likely to consider.
“Although the results should be interpreted with due caution, children seem to mainly pay attention to the emotional reactions of the fathers when deciding if situations at the dentist are potentially stressful,” states Lara Sacido, the study’s co-author.
So, what does this mean for parents?
The study highlighted the need for parents to portray a positive attitude toward dentist visits. When parents, especially fathers, exhibit no fear during dentist visits, children are less likely to develop a fear of the dentist themselves.
For fathers who struggle with a fear of the dentist, Moore Dentistry offers IV sedation for anxiety-free dentist appointments.
What is IV Sedation?
IV sedation refers to the use of sedatives that are inserted directly into your bloodstream. The advantage of IV sedation is that it works quickly and produces a state of deep relaxation for the entirety of your dental visit.
Many patients report either partial or full memory loss of the visit which allows for very anxious patients to relax and receive the quality dental care that they wouldn’t otherwise have been able to receive.
