Vitamin CEven though almost three quarters of American adults over the age of 35 suffer from gum disease; our gum health has never been on the forefront of our mind. In fact, if there is one facet of our oral health that we neglect, it’s our periodontal health.

If you are one of the many Americans who don’t always show your gums the care they deserve, we have some good news. Fortunately, restoring and improving gum health can be as easy as…eating oranges?

Vitamin C to Improve Gum Health

Apparently, Vitamin C can naturally repair gums and prevent gum disease. In fact, in a study published by the Journal of Periodontology, researchers found that adults who consumed less than 60 mg of Vitamin C in a day were more likely to suffer from gingivitis than adults who consumed at least 180 mg daily. This vitamin is incredibly important for our overall health as it helps the body repair bones, teeth, cartilage and helps wounds heal.

So, if your gums need a health boost, consider boosting your daily intake of Vitamin C per day. The Institute of Medicine suggests that a healthy amount of this vitamin for adults over 18 years old is 90 milligrams per day for men and 75 milligrams per day for women. It’s also important to know that Vitamin C is water-soluble which means that the body cannot store it long-term. Therefore, our bodies (and our gums) rely on a daily intake of this vitamin.

Where to Find Vitamin C

Foods that are rich in Vitamin C include:

  • Citrus fruits (i.e. oranges)
  • Oranges
  • Carrots
  • Red peppers
  • Sweet potatoes

You can also find fruit and vegetable juices that are high in Vitamin C. However, beware of using juices as a Vitamin C source because they are often very acidic and can actually erode gums. Drink these juices through a straw and drink water afterwards. You can also supplement your intake via multi-vitamin formulas that contain Vitamin C.
